TIDE

TIDE, whose full name is Tatsuhiro Ide, is a Tokyo-based artist born in 1984. He began his artistic practice while traveling in Australia in his early 20s, subsequently launching his career in Tokyo in 2009. TIDE's early work included intricate, small-scale pointillist pencil drawings, often depicting monochromatic worlds. His artistic development led him to explore various painting techniques, including watercolor and acrylic, culminating in a multi-layered painting style. A primary influence on TIDE's work is the Japanese manga artist and historian Shigeru Mizuki, particularly his depiction of Yokai (ghosts of folklore). TIDE's compositions frequently feature a cartoon-like cat character, often set in domestic or intimate monochromatic environments. He employs diverse techniques in his paintings, such as gestural spray paint, rough brushstrokes, and airbrush effects, to create detailed backgrounds that juxtapose with the flat, two-dimensional feline figures. His work has been exhibited internationally in cities such as New York, Tokyo, Seoul, and London.
