Gao Xingjian

Born in China in 1940, Gao Xingjian is a writer and artist who now lives and works in France. After graduating in French from the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages in 1962, he established himself in the 1980s as one of the pioneers of the Chinese dramatic and literary avant-garde, but his work was violently criticized and censored. A political refugee in France in 1988, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000. In addition to his literary activities, Gao Xingjian is also a painter. His work is characterized by a fusion of literature, theater and visual art. His style is deeply marked by the exploration of themes of individual freedom, isolation and the quest for meaning. Created in Chinese ink, his paintings of all sizes combine abstraction, figuration and pantheism. His mysterious, unusual landscapes take viewers on a journey into the abyss of the soul.
