About the artwork

Nine shirts with ties float on a plain bluish-gray background. Some are white, others gray or pink, but they are as unpatterned as the ties that tie their collars. The viewer is drawn in by the strangeness of the scene, which presents clothes without owners. As if in a team photo, the nine protagonists stand neatly arranged and hierarchically positioned for this moment in corporate life. The missing faces and bodies evoke the dissolution of identity in the business world, and suggest that workers are replaceable and undifferentiated. Moreover, the mere presence of shirts without jackets or pants lessens the seriality of the scene and injects a note of surreal humor. Finally, this work also describes the gender issues that still permeate the professional world, since the nine protagonists are clearly men.

Expert opinion

This beautifully-formatted painting is fully in keeping with the practice of English artist Richard Davidson. As usual, he projects the viewer into the world of business, injecting a dose of strangeness through the levitation of these bodiless suits against a plain background.

About the artist

Richard Davidson was born in Great Britain in 1946. After working as a solicitor in the City of London for twenty-seven years, he left the business world to study painting and dedicate himself fully to his vocation as an artist. The core of his practice lies in the use of motifs linked to professional life. Formal suits, ties and polished shoes are all accessories that recall his former career and evoke, not without irony, the world of business. The subjects that run through Richard Davidson's work are hierarchy, corporate life and the dissolution of identity, in order to paint a portrait of the contemporary urban worker.

“The whole field of white-collar work, and its accessories, goes largely unnoticed in contemporary art. My work focuses on the extraordinary banality of this neglected sector.”
