About the artwork

This screen print features André Saraiva's iconic "Mr. A" character centered within a rectangular composition. The character is rendered in black outline, depicting a figure with a round head, one eye open and the other X-ed out, a wide grin, and a top hat. Stylized arms extend outwards from the head, and a simple body extends downwards. The background of the central image is white. The central image is framed by two broad bands of color: a pink gradient at the top and a solid pink at the bottom. The top band contains the white capital letters "LOVE," and the bottom band contains "MR. A" in white capital letters. The artist's signature is visible in the lower left corner of the central white area, along with a copyright symbol in the lower right. The overall aesthetic is graphic and utilizes a limited color palette

Expert opinion

André Saraiva's work is situated within the broader context of Street Art and Pop Art, drawing on the visual language of graffiti and commercial imagery. His "Mr. A" character has transcended its origins as a street tag to become a recognized symbol in contemporary culture, reflecting the increasing acceptance and commercialization of street art forms. The market for his limited edition prints is consistent, supported by his international profile and the recognizable nature of his iconography.

About the artist

Born in 1971. Lives and works in Paris. French artist and entrepreneur André Saraiva is one of the pioneers of urban art. Discovering graffiti in 1989, he invented his famous Mr. A character, which became a veritable visual identity and made him famous. At a frenetic pace of around 20 tags a night, almost 150,000 Mr. A's have been drawn on all kinds of surfaces since the start of his career. It's a veritable invasion of the world by this cheerful, debonair little character, whose bulbous face is often topped by a top hat, and whose eyes - one round, the other covered by a cross - seem to wink at you. Perched on long, straight legs, Mr. A resembles his inventor: smiling, charming and mischievous. André goes beyond graffiti to share his vision of the contemporary world. In 2004, he was exhibited at the Parco Museum in Tokyo, and in 2006 took part in the "La Force de l'Art" exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. In 2009, he took part in the "Vraoum" exhibition at the Maison Rouge in Paris. In 2014, he exhibited at the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany, and a retrospective was organized at the Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon. His work has been exhibited in museums and contemporary art galleries worldwide.

“I came up with Mr.A, a fairly new character at the time. Graffiti was all about letters, but not so much about a character who could speak to everyone.”
