About the artwork
Full of surf, this oil on canvas is an immersion in matter. The light and shadow accentuated by this swirling movement lends the painting an eerie ambience. Oscillating between abstraction and figuration, we don't know if this movement is an end in itself or if it represents a raging aquatic element. Only a small boat indicates the humanitarian emergency unfolding before our eyes, giving the canvas a narrative dimension linked to current migratory dramas. A Raft of the Medusa fully in tune with our contemporary world.
Expert opinion
This large-format oil on canvas fully captures the dialogue between abstraction and figuration that artist Béatrice Bonnafous likes to question. The material becomes a narrative, forcefully rendering the movement of water. Through these effects, the artist conveys man's smallness in the face of nature, as well as the migratory dramas that are played out every day. A committed work, constructed on different reading levels.
About the artist
A graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Béatrice Bonnafous turned to printmaking right after her studies, and her many travels nourished her art, giving rise to a series of paintings that she has been developing ever since. Falsely abstract, they convey her chromatic quest, where gesture is magnified by color and material.
“When you're guided by color, you never know what's going to happen. Color combinations only reveal themselves once they've been applied. It's very mysterious and very loving. It's an adventure.”
