About the artwork
Through this skilful juxtaposition of references, Peter Stark's work bears witness to the enduring influence of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. Stark combines images of street art such as Banksy, mentioned in the title, with a female character from the world of comic books. This mischievous detour leads viewers to question their cultural references and imagination. The contrasting tones, dividing the composition into two distinct parts, underline the distinction between street art and the pop movement.
Expert opinion
This work is emblematic of Peter Stark's contemporary interpretation of popular culture and urban art.
About the artist
Born in 1979 in northern France, Peter Stark studied visual communications and began his career as an illustrator, specializing in the world of fashion. Influenced by pop art and the world of comics, he seeks to recapture images that oppose popular culture and high culture, integrating a dose of satire and irony. He likes to mix and recompose anachronistic images, questioning the artist's place in contemporary society. He exhibited at Galerie Aurélie de Villepoix in Paris in 2023, as well as at Pop Art Gallery in Paris. He will be exhibiting at the Lille Art Up! fair at Lille Grand Palais from March 13 to 16, 2025.
