About the artwork
Louise Brooks, a famous American silent film actress of the 1920s, is portrayed against a gray, blue and ochre background. She was particularly known for her naturalistic facial expressions, in contrast to the mannered acting of other actors of the period, which made her face an icon of cinema. Paint effects give the illusion of a mural. The different textures enhance the actress's porcelain complexion and pensive expression.
Expert opinion
This work illustrates the way the artist combines aerosol and stencil painting in his practice. The stencil was handmade by the artist, who used it to create only 5 copies of this series.
About the artist
Born in 1977, SC-Freeart (real name Stéphane Coucke) is a stencil artist. Although he began practicing his tagging skills on the cellar walls of his childhood home, he soon moved on to graffiti urban spaces in the North of France. He became the manager of Lille's Skate-park, and continues to cover the walls with his paintings, while meeting many other street artists. He is a member of numerous street art collectives, such as the Urban Square group and Echang'art. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France, notably at Lille's Urban Square Gallery in 2018 and at Lille's Le Carré space in 2019.
